Touch Wood – A Habit, A Feeling, A Mystery

Ever since I was a child, I have had this strange little habit. Whenever I say something good about my life, or whenever i appreciate someone or if the other person say good things about themselves, I immediately start looking around for wood to touch.
Sometimes it’s a table. Sometimes a chair. Sometimes I awkwardly touch a door or cupboard nearby. 😄 I don't really mind who is near me. I do it without hesitation.
And the funny part is… I never really stopped to ask why.
I simply grew up hearing people say: “Touch wood!”
And without even realising it, it became part of me.
But recently I started wondering…
How many of us actually know the meaning behind this expression?
A Small Habit Used Across the World
What amazed me is that this isn’t just something we say in India.
People across different countries use similar expressions.
In the UK and India, people say:👉 “Touch wood.”
In America, they say:👉 “Knock on wood.”
In Germany, people literally knock on wood three times.
And in Italy, interestingly, people touch iron instead of wood!
Different words.Different cultures. But the same emotion.
So Why Do People Touch Wood?
Long ago, people believed trees were sacred and full of protective energy.
Some believed spirits lived inside trees. Others believed touching wood would protect them from bad luck.
Over time, it became a way of saying:
“I hope this good thing continues.”
“Let nothing spoil this happiness.”
“May this blessing stay.”
And honestly… isn’t that such a human feeling?
Whenever life is going well, there’s a small part inside us that becomes careful.
We don’t want to “jinx” our happiness.
So we smile… say “touch wood”… and gently touch something wooden nearby.
More Than Superstition
Today, I don’t see “touch wood” as just a superstition.
I see it as gratitude.
A tiny pause where we silently acknowledge:“Yes… life has been kind.”
And maybe that is why this habit has survived for generations.
Because deep inside, every human being wants to protect the good moments in life.
Final Thoughts
Even today, I still look for wood when I say something positive.
And honestly…
I think I always will.
Touch wood. 🤍
